And why you should be hosting a “Biggest Morning Tea” too.
Cancer Council research estimates that 1.9 million Australians will have a personal history of cancer by 2040 – that’s an additional 800,000 people living with or beyond cancer – up 72% on current statistics.
Current numbers shows that 350 Australians are diagnosed with cancer everyday. That’s 127,750 a year, or just slightly more than the capacity at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Whichever way you slice it, almost every Australian has either been directly, or indirectly, affected by cancer.
You might be wondering what this has to do with cake… Don’t worry, I’m getting to that.
Each year, in May Cancer Council’s major fundraiser – Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea – is hosted across the country. This is where you register to host, gather your friends or work mates, sip some tea, nibble some scones and raise a whole bunch of much needed dollars.
But where does all my baked goods raised donations end up? Glad you asked.
The money raised during Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea goes to all the great work Cancer Council do day in, day out. This encompasses everything from research to prevention and support. Initiatives like their information and support hotline for those affected, research labs and awareness campaigns in communities aimed at prevention.
So this coming Thursday, 24th May whip up a cake (or head to your nearest supermarket for the next best thing) and raise a mug all in the name of a good cause – and delicious treats. We know we will be!
